Recognition of ongoing generic medicines savings

13 May 2014.

The Generic Medicines Industry Association (GMiA) welcomes the Government’s continued
investment in medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and the absence of further
PBS pricing reform.
The PBS is a world-class system that benefits every Australian. Tonight’s announcement recognises the
significant and ongoing savings delivered by the generic medicines sector. The government is right not
to impose any further pricing reform.
The generic medicines sector provides affordable access to quality, safe and effective medicines. The
budget announcement provides certainty for an industry that:
  •  Employs 2,400 Australians
  • Manufactures and exports $400million in medicines annually
  • Ensures patient access and choice
  • Increases investment in Australia.
“The GMiA looks forward to ongoing constructive dialogue with Government to sustain access to
quality medicines through the PBS including through the development of a National Generic
Medicines Policy,” said GMiA Chair Mark Crotty.
“Members of GMiA are mobilised to present practical policy options to Government that will further
strengthen the PBS.”
